City of San Ramon

HIGHLIGHTS: Located in the heart of the San Ramon Valley and stretching from near the foothills of scenic Mount Diablo across the valley to the Las Trampas Ridge, the city of San Ramon is located approximately 30 miles east of the San Francisco Bay Area and 45 miles north of San Jose. In addition to the scenic beauty of Mount Diablo and its vast foothills, San Ramon's moderate, warm weather, quality housing, good schools, and country-like rural setting make it a very attractive residential location.

San Ramon is a dynamic town that has greatly benefited from an influx of white-collar jobs in recent years. The city's population consists of middle to upper-middle class, and the demographics are constantly changing with local improvements and additions. In 1982 the Bishop Ranch Office Park was developed on 585 acres of land in the heart of the city, transforming San Ramon into a significant regional employment center. With more than six million square feet of existing office space, Bishop Ranch is home to some 200 companies, and over 18,000 office workers commute daily to the office center.

In addition to the rich supply of employment opportunities within the community, San Ramon's location on I-680 and near I-580 also gives its residents convenient access to Walnut Creek, Oakland, Hayward and San Francisco to the north/west, and San Jose and Silicon Valley to the south. BART was also recently extended to nearby Dublin.

Famous for its warm and clear sunny days throughout most of the year, San Ramon provides endless opportunities to enjoy outdoor recreation activities such as jogging, hiking, biking, and golfing. Many parks and open spaces such as nearby Mount Diablo State Park and Las Trampas Regional Wilderness Area offer many opportunities for natural retreats.

San Ramon has the third fastest growing population in Contra Costa County, and within the next 15 years it is expected to grow to an estimated 71,500 residents. In addition to the ever-growing supply of homes, a solid base of apartments makes up roughly 20% of the housing units. In response to these strong growth factors and a population that is varied and young, community activities are booming. Due to its size, San Ramon has a large supply and full variety of shopping centers and restaurants, and its residents have easy access to the shopping and restaurants in nearby Blackhawk, Danville, Dublin, Pleasanton and Castro Valley.

HISTORY: San Ramon was the site of one of the early farming communities of Contra Costa County. Although the first growth was in communities closer to the water (e.g., Martinez), as farming and ranching flourished in the 19th century, San Ramon evolved. It is located at the south end of the narrow San Ramon Valley.

The opening of the Caldecott Tunnel and a postwar exodus from the urban areas fired tremendous growth in central contra the 1950's, which became a geographical extension of the affluent Oakland/Berkley Hills area. The orchards and farmland of Danville and San Ramon offered a perfect setting for affordable housing.

During the 1970's San Ramon exploded with residential development. As other communities ran out of buildable land, San Ramon offered an extension of the affluent areas which adjoined it. While lower cost housing was developed in Concord, Martinez, and the Delta communities, San Ramon became an upscale alternative.

With the growth of the South Bay as a hi-tech haven many commuters are heading south.  San Ramon, which positioned south of Lamorinda, offers a shorter commute and generally newer homes.
