City of Pleasant Hill
HIGHLIGHTS: Pleasant Hill is right in the middle of central Contra Costa County. Whereas most the surrounding communities have at least one physical geographic boundary, Pleasant Hill has none. It is surrounded by Lafayette, Martinez, Pacheco, Concord, and Walnut Creek, and the neighborhoods of each seem to flow together seamlessly at the borders.
For some time Pleasant Hill has been a community in search of identity. So much of the town is a reflection of the towns it borders and until recently there was not much in terms of a downtown commercial center. Does there need to be? There have been many years of vacillation since the mid-seventies. Pleasant Hill seemed to be in limbo while pro-growth and antigrowth factions struggled for dominance. The emerging downtown seems to be a compromise short of Walnut Creek style urbanization, and beyond Pleasant Hill's bedroom community past.
Although most residential construction took place in the 1950's-60's in the form of tract homes, the past decade has seen a 26% population increase and there have been many new homes built. There has been renewal of the downtown strip adjacent to I 680. This has been a long process, but the result seems to be well planned and executed. There are many new stores, a new city hall, a new giant bookstore/coffee shop, a new supermarket, a new hotel, and a movie complex is on the way. Bank of America employs hundreds in four office buildings near the freeway.
Pleasant Hill is the site of the main county library and Diablo Valley College (DVC), the largest community college in the county. The college provides a great resource for local residents by offering many activities, classes and services. It is also a major "feeder" school to the U.C. system. Berkeley actually accepts students, but defers them to DVC for their lower division studies. There is also a YMCA with, pool and private gym facilities, with plans for expansion.
Pleasant Hill is loaded with activities for both adults and children through a combination of many playgrounds, parks and sports facilities, and there are many classes and activities for adults/seniors at adult school. There are 11 city parks, a canal trail for joggers, hiking and cyclists.
Sun Valley Mall and The Willows Mall are located virtually on the border between Pleasant Hill and Concord, in Concord.
