Community - Profile

City of Moraga

HIGHLIGHTS: Moraga is one of the three cities that form the affluent community known as "Lamorinda", which also includes the separate cities of Lafayette and Orinda. This area is bordered on the west and south by a high ridge separating it from Alameda County and on the east and north by the relatively flatter terrain of Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, and Martinez.

Moraga is mostly located in several valleys that wind through the low foothills between Lafayette/Orinda and the high ridges separating Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. There is very little land in the city on which to build new homes, so generally, people who want modern amenities renovate homes, which were built during the 1950's through early 1970's.

Moraga benefits from a high proportion of open space, excellent schools, isolation from any urbanization, larger than average homes with generous lot sizes, homogeneous neighborhoods, and a strong sense of community. Moraga suffers from limited egress to freeways and mass transit, and has modest retail and entertainment opportunities. Moraga is one of the most sought-after communities in the east bay area.

HISTORY: Moraga is named for its founder Joaquin Moraga a Spanish military officer and the founder of San Francisco. He built an adobe on a knoll in Orinda above present day Miramonte High School. Moraga's cattle ranch was successful and comfortable. In 1886, an Oakland attorney obtained ownership of the Rancho and the Moraga's farm using dubious means. In 1912, the bulk of the Rancho was purchased by James Irvine, who farmed the land, planting many acres of pears and walnut trees. In 1913, the town-site of Moraga was established.

Up until the 1960's Moraga had evolved into an affluent but substantially rural community. The opening of the Caldecott Tunnel and a postwar exodus from the urban areas fired tremendous growth in the 1950's. Lafayette and Orinda became a geographical extension of the affluent Oakland/Berkeley Hills area, and Moraga the extension of these communities, Lower income (smaller) housing evolved farther east from the tunnel in the Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Concord areas.
