Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are lead-acid batteries but are sealed instead of vented. The electrolyte is held captive in a fibrous glass mat that can't be spilled. This glass matting also provides pockets that assist in the recombination of hydrogen and oxygen gasses (generated during charging) back into water. These batteries hold more power for longer and with lower maintenance than traditional lead-acid (flooded) batteries. Done Deal uses 3 Lifeline AGM batteries with a combined weight of over 300 pounds, configured in two banks: the house bank is two large 4D batteries weighing over 130 lbs each connected in a parallel 12 volt configuration giving about 46 hours of power at a constant 8 amps of discharge; the reserve starter battery is a group 24 which gives 800 cranking amps at 68º F, and 8 hours 8 amp discharge (see pictures below). Along with our navigational and communications electronics, these batteries provide both AC and DC power for appliances while at sea. An inverter/charger combination, gives us 20 amps of AC current from the batteries, with a surge capacity up to 50 amps, and also charges both battery banks simultaneously as an echo-charger at the dock, with up to 100 amp capacity, with temperature sensitivity, and equalization . |
